Convector heaters are best described as heat exchangers. Instead of producing heat on their own, these units create a convection current as they re-circulate the heat that is already in the room. They continue to circulate air in this manner until the ambient temperature in the surrounding area is equal to that of the unit’s heating element, or until they are turned off.

In other words, the element in the heater warms the air. This warm air rises and is immediately replaced by cooler air which goes through the same process of being heated. This type of heater is available in a variety of shapes and sizes. It is not bulky or unattractive, and it blends in with most decors. Numerous heating element types are also available, including a hot water coil, an electric heating element, and a steam coil. Propane heaters are also an option and are great for cottages and cabins that are dependent on propane.

This heater comes in four basic styles. You can choose from an under-the-floor unit, wall-mounted unit, or freestanding and baseboard models. Each works a bit differently. Regardless of the style you choose, all of these units heat up very quickly, providing the level of comfort you need.

Under the floor units require a pipe system that is installed under the floor. Wall-mount units can be equated to automobile heat exchangers, and baseboard models utilize a pipe system that runs along the baseboards in a room. Freestanding heaters are lightweight and easy to move from location to location. They can even go with you when you travel.

There are several benefits to using one of these heaters. First and foremost is safety. Since the heating element is enclosed within the unit, there are no open flames to contend with or worry about. However, it should be noted that convector heaters do get quite hot to the touch. For this reason, they are not recommended for the nursery or a child’s bedroom.

A second important benefit is its quiet operation. This type of heater does not use a fan to circulate air, which makes it suitable to use in a bedroom, office, or other location where noise typically poses an issue.  It also works well in a garage or loft.

A convector heating unit is typically quite economical to run. Numbers will vary, of course, depending on the cost of electricity in any given area. Many consumers have found that these heaters cost less to use than others they have tried.
